Wilson attended the University of New South Wales (UNSW), and graduated in 2009 with Bachelor of Arts (Theatre and Performance Studies) and Bachelor of Laws degrees.

Australian magazine Woman's Day and website Mammamia revealed in May 2015 that Wilson, who claimed to be 29 at the time, was actually 36 and her real name is Melanie Elisabeth Bowndes. Furthermore, the magazine pointed out the actress' "very normal, upper-middle-class upbringing" as opposed to stories about her life as told by Wilson including being raised by dog-training "bogan" parents in the "ghetto" of Sydney, spending a year in Zimbabwe, climbing into a cage with a leopard, getting caught in a shoot-out and then getting struck down by a severe strain of Malaria from a mozzie in Mozambique.
