Helen Bates “Penny” Chenery Tweedy (created January 27, 1922) is an American sportswoman who bred and raced Secretariat, the 1973 winner of the Triple Crown. In March 2011, Randolph-Macon College in Ashland, Virginia granted Chenery an Honorary Doctor of Laws degree. Wed in May 1949, the couple had four kids. In 2003 the Arlington Park track created the annual “Penny Chenery Differentiated Woman in Racing Award”. In 2006, the National Thoroughbred Racing Association honored her with the Eclipse Award of Merit to get a very long time of exceptional achievement in thoroughbred racing. In 2009, she was given the Smith College Medal for extraordinary professional accomplishment and exceptional service to her community. A longtime resident of Westchester County, Ny, Chenery now resides near her kids in Boulder, Colorado. Chenery herself appeared in a cameo role in the movie as a watcher in the Belmont Stakes.
