Since September 2013, he’s been chairman and CEO of Azoff MSG Amusement, a fresh enterprise using The Madison Square Garden Business. He’s also on the board of Clear Channel Communications, Starz Inc. In the year 2012, he topped Billboard’s Power 100 and was named the strongest man in the music business.
Azoff started marketing and booking groups while a pupil at Danville High school and after that in college in the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He moved to La in 1970 with his first customer, Dan Fogelberg. He worked for Geffen Roberts direction and there started working together with the Eagles, a relationship that’s since survived for over 40 years. During his career he’s worked as an agent, personal manager, concert promoter, movie producer, independent record label proprietor merchandiser, music publisher, and CEO of a record company. Based on Thomas R. King’s novel, The Operator, Geffen controlled Azoff into leaving MCA and going to Warner Music Group where Azoff began Giant Records. King writes that Geffen needed Azoff out at MCA to clear the way for MCA to purchase Geffen Records. So Geffen convinced Mo Ostin at Warner Music to offer Irving Azoff a “fantasy” label deal. Giant Records ran for much of the 1990s until Azoff chose to return to concentrating on artist management. In the year 2012, Azoff seemed in Artifact, a documentary film concerning the current music business centered on the legal fight between Thirty Seconds to Mars and record label EMI.
