In 1963, Chuck Schwab and two other partners started Investment Index, an investment newsletter. At its peak, the newsletter had 3,000 subscribers, each paying $84 a year to subscribe. In April 1971, the company was incorporated in California as First Commander Corporation, a wholly owned subsidiary company of Commander Industries, Inc., for conventional, brokerage services and to release the Schwab investment newsletter. In November of this year, Schwab and four others bought all the stock from Commander Industries, Inc. In 1972, Schwab purchased all the stock from what was once Commander Industries. In September 1975, Schwab started its first branch in Sacramento, California, after offering discount brokerage from May 1, 1975. In 1977 Schwab started offering seminars to customers, and by 1978 Schwab had 45,000 customer accounts total, the amount growing to 84,000 in 1979. In 1980 Schwab created the business’s first 24 hour quote service, as well as the total of customer accounts grew to 147,000.
