Carly Fiorina (produced Cara Carleton Sneed; September 6, 1954) is an American former business executive and also a former California Republican nominee for the United States Senate. Fiorina served as chief executive officer of Hewlett Packard from 1999 to 2005 and formerly was an executive at AT&T and its own gear and technology spinoff, Lucent.
Fiorina was considered among the strongest women in operation during her tenure at Lucent and Hewlett Packard. While she was chief executive at HP, the business weathered the fall of the dot-com bubble, even though the stock lost half of its own worth throughout her tenure. In 2002, the organization finished a controversial merger with rival computer company Compaq, which made HP the planet ‘s biggest personal computer manufacturer. In 2005, Fiorina was made to step down as chief executive officer and chairman of HP following “differences [together with the board of directors] about the best way to execute HP’s strategy”. In 2008, Fiorina served as an adviser to Republican presidential nominee John McCain.
In early 2008, Fiorina was referred to in media sources as a possible vice presidential nominee, and The New York Times noted that while she did not need to run, she’s an executive who could potentially become a nominee for President. She was likewise a “point man” for the McCain campaign on problems associated with company and economic matters. Fiorina’s severance package from Hewlett Packard in 2005, was seen by some as a political responsibility throughout the campaign. In response to questions within a radio interview on September 15, 2008, she said that Palin lacks the expertise to run a leading company like Hewlett Packard, “but that is not what she is running for. Running a corporation is a distinct group of stuff.” Fiorina after amended her opinion, saying that not one of the nominees on each ticket had the expertise to run a major corporation. After media coverage of her remarks, among her scheduled appearances for the campaign was canceled, although Fiorina continued to chair the party’s fundraising committee.
