Craig “Speedy” Claxton (created May 8, 1978) is a retired professional basketball player. Before the NBA, Claxton played at Hofstra University under present Villanova University coach Jay Wright. Claxton contributed cash to help construct the 5000-seat stadium where the Hofstra team plays, and his number 10 was retired by Hofstra on January 31, 2009. Claxton was inducted to the Hofstra Hall of Fame on January 29, 2011. Claxton was drafted in 2000, 20th complete, by the Philadelphia 76ers. He missed his entire rookie season because of knee injury suffered through the preseason. In 2002 Claxton was traded to the San Antonio Spurs, where he played about the 2003 tournament team as a substitute, backing up Tony Parker. In 2003 Claxton was signed by the Golden State Warriors into a three-year contract worth US$10 million. On February 24, 2005, Claxton and Dale Davis were traded in the Warriors to the New Orleans Hornets for Baron Davis. On July 12, 2006, Claxton signed a contract worth about $25 million over four years using the Atlanta Hawks. Claxton just played 44 games with all the Hawks, as he was injured in every year after he signed together with the team. He was waived by Golden State on February 6, 2010, following the team signed Anthony Tolliver for the rest of the season. Claxton served as a faculty scout with all the Golden State Warriors before joining the Hofstra University men’s basketball staff in 2013. Claxton’s parents are from Antigua and Barbuda. His brother Michael (M. Pails) played college basketball for the Villanova Wildcats. Claxton has two daughters, Aniya and London with ex wife Meeka. The couple announced their divorce in July 2014.
