He served as the Commmandant in the Royal Marine Corps at Shrivenham from 1967 to 1969; GOC-in-C, Western Command from 1969 to 1972; Colonel, Cheshire Regiment from 1969 to 1971; Colonel Commandant, Prince of Wales Division from 1971 to 1974; Chairman, S.S.A.F.A. from 1974 to 1985; and Lieutenant, Tower of London from 1975 to 1981.

He is survived by two sons and two daughters. Son of the late Colonel Arthur Crookenden DSO; and son-in-law of the late Lord Hugh Kindersley.

He was a Brigade Major of the 6th Airlanding Brigade during World War II for the British Armed Forces. He was involved in the planning of the seizing of the Orne Bridge on D-Day. A month after landing in Normandy, he was given command of the 9th Parachute Battalion and led them in the fierce fighting of the Battle of the Ardennes and in the last parachute operation of the Second World War, the Rhine crossing, for which he was awarded a DSO (Distinguished Service Order).
