She was married to British actor Lionel Atwill in 1920. They played opposite each other in the play "Another Man's Shoes" (1918) and played together in "Deburau" (1920) as well. At the time she went by the name of Elsie Mackay. Poppy's affair with another man led to scandal in 1924, and her career ended in ruins.
