Maya Rao (born May 2, 1928) is a veteran Indian classical dancer, choreographer and educator, in Kathak style. She is credited for bringing Kathak, a North Indian dance style to South India, when she opened her dance school, Natya Institute of Kathak and Choreography (NIKC) in Malleswaram, Bangalore in 1987. She is also the founder director of her dance company, "Natya and Stem Dance Kampani" based in Bangalore.She was born in Bangalore to Hattangadi Sanjeev Rao and Subhadra Bai, with three brothers and three sisters. After completeing her schooling she joined Maharani’s College in 1945. At an early age she learnt Hindustani classical music – vocal and instrumental Dilruba from Rama Rao. Rao received her dance trained under noted Guru, Shambhu Maharaj from Lucknow Gharana at National Institute of Kathak Dance in Delhi, and also . She also trained with Guru Sunder Prasad of the Jaipur Gharana. She was based in Delhi for several years before she moved to Bangalore to start her dance school.She was awarded the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for Creative dance/Choreography, given by the Sangeet Natak Akademi, India's National Academy of Music, Dance & Drama in 1989. In 2013, she received the ‘Tagore Ratna’ award, given Sangeet Natak Akademi, also in the same year she received the lifetime achievement award for her contribution to dance and choreography at the Epic Women conference. Over the years, she has trained over 3,000 students, notably, Nirupama Rajendra, Satya Narayana Charka, Akul Balaji.Her daughter Madhu Nataraj is also a dancer and choreographer, and started STEM Kampni, a branch of NIKC. Her Maya Rao's autobiography, Maya Rao — A Lifetime in Choreography was released by playwright Girish Karnad in 2014.
