1It's a mystery, music, so I can't say I understand why one song is a hit and another one's not. Sometimes songs go through a convoluted series of pathways, through families and friends and mix-tapes, and they can end up rising to the top. I take great heart from that. That can take ten or fifteen years sometimes. I have a sense that my body of work is kind of becoming this lovely, living organism that pops out little sweet things every now and then.
2[on fellow-New Zealander Sir Edmund Hillary, as a national hero] It was not just because he climbed a mountain, but he followed it up by building schools in Nepal and being an all-around good guy. And he was in the phone-book with everybody else. Humility, greatness, aspirations - the whole bit, wrapped up on one.
3I am very, very ambitious for my songs to be as great as they can be. Having picked it up and fashioned it, and really given it a lot of attention and love, and nailed the second verse and chorus, I kind of think it exists on its own and goes out and has a life. And I would like to think it has a really good, big life.
