He submitted a spec script for the situation comedy “Taxi”, that has been created, and afterwards became the series’ showrunner. During the the next couple of years, Simon composed and produced for “Cheers”, “It’s Garry Shandling’s Show” as well as other programs, in addition to composing the 1991 movie “The Super”.
Simon gathered the show’s first writing team, co-composed eight episodes and continues to be credited with “developing [the show’s] sensibility”. Simon’s relationship with Groening was extended and he left the show in 1993, negotiating a payoff which finds him receive tens of countless dollars in the show’s earnings annually. The next year he co-created “The George Carlin Show”, before after working as a director on shows like “The Drew Carey Show”.
Simon has since turned to fields outside television. He frequently appears on Howard Stern’s radio shows, managed fighter Lamon Brewster and helped direct him to the World Boxing Organization Heavyweight Tournament in 2004 and was a regular poker player and six-time in the cash finisher in the World Series of Poker. Simon runs the Sam Simon Foundation, which saves and trains stray dogs and financed the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society vessel the “MY Sam Simon”, that was named after him. He’s been married twice, including to the actress Jennifer Tilly, and is now engaged. Carrying out a profile of Simon on “60 Minutes” in 2007, CBS writer Daniel Schorn composed in an internet post that Simon was “possibly the Renaissance man of the baffling, doubtful era we are now living in.”
