He was awarded the MBE (Member of the Order of the British Empire) in the 2013 Queen's Birthday Honours List for his services to geology and science communication. He is the Professor of Geoscience Communication at the University of Plymouth in Plymouth, Devon, England.

A former child actor, he studied at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama. In 1978 he appeared as Napoleon, leader of the Gorbals Diehards, in the Award-winning children's series Huntingtower (1978).
