For John LaZar the American actor please see John LaZar.John Lazar (1 December 1801?8 June 1879) was an Australian actor and the Mayor of Adelaide from 1855 to 1858. Born in Edinburgh, Lazar came to Sydney in 1837 where he worked as an actor and theatre manager. He first came to Adelaide in 1841 but was unsuccessful; later, in 1841, he returned to the city with greater success. In the 1850s he opened a jeweller's shop and became an alderman in 1853. He left the city council in 1859 and moved to New Zealand, where he died in 1879.
According to James McDonough's biography "Big Bosoms And Square Jaws: The Biography Of Russ Meyer, King Of The Sex Film," Lazar believes that his role as Ronnie 'Z-Man' Barzell in 'Russ Meyer''s Beyond the Valley of the Dolls (1970) wrecked his career, despite its huge success at the box office. He feels he got "typed" as a freak and was avoided by casting directors because of Meyer and co-screenwriter Roger Ebert's idea of having Z-Man be revealed as a transsexual with exposed breasts.
