Just 18 days after "The Racers" premiere, Fitch was waiting in the Mercedes-Benz pit to replace French driver Pierre Levegh behind the wheel of the their 300SLR at the 1955 24 Hours of Le Mans when it slewed into the crowd, killing Levegh and 83 spectators -- the biggest catastrophe in motor racing history.
