He was born in Asnières-sur-Seine, Hauts-de-Seine and died in Paris.Between the years 1944–1949, he was the husband of actress Simone Signoret, whose career he encouraged. He was the father of her daughter Catherine Allégret, an actress.He was the younger brother of Marc Allégret, also a film director.
