He contracted polio at 9 years old and went grueling rehabilitation which entailed confinement in an iron long, muscle transplants, and relearning to walk, painfully with crutches. He spent four years in the hospital before his discharge.

He traveled to England on a Fulbright Fellowship in 1964 and remained there for the rest of his life. He taught design and film at the Royal College of Art and the London College of Printing.
