John William Oates (created April 7, 1949) is an American rock, R&B and soul guitarist, musician, songwriter and producer best known as half of the rock and soul duet, Hall & Oates (with Daryl Hall). Although Oates’s primary role in the duet was guitarist, he also co-wrote lots of the Top tunes they recorded, including (with Hall): “Sara Smile” (the tune describes Hall’s then-girlfriend, Sara Allen), “She Is Gone”, and “Out of Touch”, at the same time as (with Allen & Hall): “You Make My Dreams”, “I Can Not Go for That (No Can Do)”, “Maneater”, and “Adult Education”. Oates also co-composed and sang backup on the tune “Electric Blue”, recorded by the group Icehouse, that was a Billboard Top Ten hit. He also co-composed, produced and sang duet together with the Canadian group The Parachute Club on the 1987 song “Love is Fire” which was a Top 30 hit in Canada. Oates was inducted to the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2004, as well as in 2014, he was inducted to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, as an associate of the duo Hall & Oates.
