Beck Bio/Wiki, Net Worth, Married 2018
Beck Hansen (born Bek David Campbell; July 8, 1970), known by the stage name Beck, is an American musician, singer-songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist. He rose to fame in the early 1990s with his lo-fi, sonically experimental style, and he became well known for creating musical collages of a wide range of styles. His later recordings encompass folk, funk, soul, hip hop, alternative rock, country, and psychedelia. He has released 12 studio albums, as well as several non-album singles and a book of sheet music.Born in Los Angeles in 1970, Beck discovered hip hop and folk music in his teens and began to perform locally at coffeehouses and clubs. He moved to New York City in 1989 and became involved in the city's small but intense anti-folk movement. After returning to his hometown in the early 1990s, he cut his breakthrough single "Loser", which became a worldwide hit in 1994. His 1996 release Odelay produced hit singles, topped critic polls and won several awards. He released the stripped-down Mutations in 1998, and the funk-infused Midnite Vultures in 1999. The downcast, acoustic Sea Change (2002) showcased a more serious Beck, and 2005's Guero returned to sample-based production. The Information (2006) was inspired by electro-funk and hip hop, and Modern Guilt (2008), likewise, by 1960s music. In February 2014, Beck released the album Morning Phase. With a pop art collage of musical styles, oblique and ironic lyrics, and postmodern arrangements incorporating samples, drum machines, live instrumentation and sound effects, Beck has been hailed by critics and the public throughout his musical career as being amongst the most creative and idiosyncratic musicians of 1990s and 2000s alternative rock. Two of Beck's most popular and acclaimed recordings are Odelay and Sea Change, both of which were ranked on Rolling Stone 's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time. The four-time platinum artist has collaborated with several artists and has made several contributions to soundtracks. Beck is married to actress Marissa Ribisi, and is a Scientologist. # | Quote |
---|---|
1 | [describing the 'through-line' of his most recent recordings, 2014] A kind of shedding of skin or some sort of attempt to manifest in words and melody some kind of experience, some quality of observation. That's all it is really. |
2 | A record company is like a giant ATM machine. |
3 | I'm just bursting onto the scene like a pathetic, gold-plated sperm. |
# | Fact |
---|---|
1 | (March 29, 2005) His new album "Guero" was released. It's also his first follow-up in 3 years since the 2002 album "Sea Change". |
2 | Daughter, Tuesday, born May 2007. |
3 | His song "Loser" was ranked on VH1's 100 Greatest songs of the '90s. |
4 | Ranked #70 on VH1's 100 Sexiest Artists. |
5 | Expecting baby number 2. |
6 | Has an album in the works. He said that this album was being produced before "Guero". |
7 | Six songs from "Guero" were featured on the hit teen drama The O.C. (2003). |
8 | On the song "E-Pro" from the album "Guero", he gave a co-writing credit to Beastie Boys, as the backing beat to the song came from the Beastie's "So What'cha Want". Although he was not required to give them a writing credit (he could have merely given the "contains a sample from" credit), he did so out of respect and friendship for that group. |
9 | During his childhood, he pretty much had no friends, which gave him time to discover and practice his musical talent. |
10 | Tom Petty covered his song "Asshole" and Johnny Cash covered his song "Rowboat". |
11 | Brother-in-law of Giovanni Ribisi, and Gina Ribisi. |
12 | Son-in-law of Gay Ribisi. |
13 | His father, who is Canadian-born, is the son of a Presbyterian minister, and has Scottish ancestry. His mother was from a family of hippie/beatnik artists. Beck's maternal grandfather, Alfred Earl Hansen, had Norwegian ancestry. Beck's maternal grandmother, Audrey Ostlin, was born in Newark, New Jersey, to a Swedish father, Olaf Ostlin, and an Ashkenazi Jewish mother, Sadie Rosenberg (whose family was from Poland and Russia). |
14 | His mother, Bibbe Hansen, was the youngest member of Andy Warhol's entourage of stars, debuting in his unreleased 1965 film "Prison" at age 13 and appearing in a handful of other Warhol films of the mid-1960's, including Restaurant (1965) with Edie Sedgwick, before being sent to reform school, where she would remain until she was 18. |
15 | Son, Cosimo Henri Hansen, born May 2004, with Marissa Ribisi. |
16 | Up until Beck did the album "Mutations," he played virtually all the instruments on almost all of the songs on his recordings. From "Mutations" on, he continued to produce and write the material, but recorded it with a band. |
17 | The Dust Brothers, the famous producing team who worked with Beck on "Odelay," require a writing credit on all songs they produce, but they admitted that (more so than any collaborator they've had) Beck was responsible for the sound of "Odelay" and wrote virtually all of the words and music. |
18 | The album "Sea Changes" was allegedly inspired by his heartbreak from the end of his relationship with longtime girlfriend Leigh Limon. |
19 | Expecting first child with wife, Marissa Ribisi, in May 2004. |
20 | This video for his song "Devil's Haircut" was modeled after the movie Midnight Cowboy (1969). |
21 | Won "Best Alternative Performance" Grammys for back-to-back albums: Odelay (1996) and Mutations (1998). |
22 | In the early '90s, Beck frequently played gigs at the Troy, a coffee shop owned by his mother and stepfather. |
23 | Stepson of Sean Carrillo. |
24 | Son of string musician David Campbell, with whom he has collaborated several times. |
25 | Brother of third generation fluxus artist Channing Hansen. |
26 | Took his mother's maiden name upon his parents' divorce. |
27 | Split up with his girlfriend stylish Leigh Limon after being together since 1991. [2000] |
28 | Grandson of Fluxus artist Al Hansen. |
29 | Son of Bibbe Hansen and David Campbell. |
30 | Award-winning singer |
