Antony Santos is a bachata musician from the Dominican Republic, famous for his part in redefining the genre to include romantic music. Santos entered onto the scene in the early 1990s, starting his career as the guira musician for guy “bachatero” Luis Vargas, and then leave the group and keep an extremely public feud with Vargas that will continue until Vargas’ career faded into obscurity. Santos became the very first rural bachatero to reach a mainstream audience, with his hit “Voy pa’ll”, right after Blas Durn had introduced the electric guitar to the genre. Santos’ adoption of soft romantic lyrics was more socially accepted than the bawdy design common to bachata before him, and he just became the genre’s top musician, helping transfer bachata into the mainstream. Santos has helped explain the sound of modern bachata, largely through his use of a chorus pedal as well as the Yamaha APX chain of guitars (with a Gibson Classic Humbucker mounted in the soundhole). Santos is now the top paid bachatero in the Dominican Republic.
