#Fact
1Directed one Oscar nominated performance: Terrence Howard in Hustle & Flow (2005).
2He named his favorite films as Matewan (1987), The Blues Brothers (1980), The Celebration (1998), The Bridge on the River Kwai (1957) and Purple Rain (1984).
3His mother, Gail Brewer, was Meredith Patterson's drama teacher at College Park High School in Pleasant Hill, California.
4His maternal grandfather was former Major League baseball player "Marvelous" Marv Throneberry (1933-1994), a feared Minor League power-hitter but best remembered as an integral part of the legendarily inept 1962 New York Mets.
5Spent most of his childhood in Memphis, Tennessee.
6Named among Fade In Magazine's "100 People in Hollywood You Need to Know" in 2005.

#Quote
1I began to think that there was a place for 'Footloose' to get retold again, that there was actually a more conducive political climate, an emotional climate to explore a town that has experienced a trauma and a shock, and starts overreacting.
2I think that there's a particular type of person who goes into children's theater, and then goes into theater in high school. There was something about the guys I knew in theater, we were all very vulnerable. You could tell that at some point we were made fun of.
3I was raised a Southern Baptist, and my whole family were Christians. However, my Dad was really into science and astronomy, so I felt very balanced. I still had respect for faith.
4And out of all the movies, I don't know what it is, I'll always sit down and watch our 'Footloose'. I cry, I get excited, I cheer, my heart pounds. I really enjoy it.
5Sometimes I feel that 'Footloose' is the rite of passage.
6I grew up in a place that felt very integrated.
7I'm surprised by how many people have not seen 'Footloose.'
8I got a Walkman, I had the 'Footloose' soundtrack and I danced to it constantly.

#Trademark
1Uses the phrase "Alan Loves Mamie", mostly in background graffiti.
2Often uses music as a key motif. Each film focuses on a different genre of music.
3Frequently casts Claude Phillips.
4His films are set in the South.
