Ben Israel was born in Israel in 1957. His mom was created in Vienna and was saved in the ghetto by American volunteers, after immigrating to Israel. His dad was employed in the print business, while his mom worked in map making for the authorities. Ben Israel grew up in Tel Aviv. He adored baking in the kitchen as a youngster. Ben Israel began a dancing career at age 21, right after leaving the military. He specialized in modern dance. He danced together with the Israeli dance firms Batsheva and Batdor over an interval of some 15 years, and toured worldwide. Close to the conclusion of his dancing career, he went to America. In 1993, while living in NYC, Ben Israel retired from dancing, in part due to having developed arthritis. He was found and mentored by Martha Stewart who saw among his cakes in a window.
