John Sculley III (born April 6, 1939) is an American businessman, entrepreneur and investor in high tech startups. In May 1987, Sculley was named Silicon Valley’s top-paid executive, with a yearly salary of US$2.2M.
Sales at Apple grown from $800 million to $8 billion under Sculley’s direction, although many credit his success to the fact Sculley joined the firm only when Steve Jobs’ visions and creations had become tremendously profitable. Nevertheless, his stint at Apple remains controversial because of his departure from creator Steve Jobs’s sales arrangement, especially seeing Sculley’s determination to compete with IBM in selling computers to identical kinds of consumers. Others state the “two clashed over direction fashions and precedence, Jobs focusing on future initiation and Sculley more on present product lines and profitability.” But Sculley finally was made to step down as Apple CEO because he was opposed to licensing Macintosh applications and was talking to Goldman Sachs about dividing Apple into two firms.
John Sculley is acknowledged globally as a specialist in advertising, in part due to his early successes at PepsiCo, notably his launch of the Pepsi Challenge, which enabled the organization to achieve market share from primary competitor Coca Cola. He used similar marketing strategies through the 1980s and 1990s at Apple to mass market Macintosh personal computers, and now he continues to discuss and write about tumultuous marketing strategies. Sculley is presently invested in and involved using several high tech startup businesses, including 3CInteractive, XL Advertising (now rebranded as Zeta Interactive), Inflexion Point, Mobeam, OpenPeak, x10 Credit, Pivot Acquisition Corp., nextSource, and WorldMate. Among their health care investments are Watermark Medical, MDLIVE, Audax Health Solutions, Misfit Wearables, and Modernizing Medicine.
