Jeffrey Howard Archer, Baron Archer of Weston super Mare (born 15 April 1940) is an English writer and former politician. Before becoming an author, Archer was a Member of Parliament (1969–74), but stepped down over a financial scandal which left him nearly broke. Afterwards, following a reversal in his bundles in the royalties of his bestselling novels, he became deputy chairman of the Conservative Party (1985–86) before stepping down after another scandal, which may result in the conclusion of his career in elected office. His novels have sold at least 250 million copies globally.
His first novel, Not a Penny More, Not a Penny Less, was picked up from the literary agent Deborah Owen and released first in the United States, then eventually in Britain in the fall of 1976. The novel was a success and Archer averted insolvency. A BBC Television version of the novel was air in 1990, as well as a radio version was aired on BBC Radio 4 in the early 1980s. Kane and Abel proved to be his bestselling work, reaching number one on The New York Times bestsellers list. The next year, Granada TV screened a ten-part version of some other Archer bestseller, First Among Equals, which told the story of four guys as well as their pursuit to eventually become Prime Minister. In 1979, Archer bought the Old Vicarage, Grantchester, a house related to the poet Rupert Brooke. By now Archer was back in a comfortable financial position and started to hold shepherd’s pie and Krug celebrations for leading individuals at his London flat, which looks out on the Houses of Parliament.
