Template:Multiple issuesAndre Alice Norton (born Alice Mary Norton, February 17, 1912 – March 17, 2005) was an American writer of science fiction and fantasy (with some works of historical fiction and contemporary fiction) under the pen names Andre Norton, Andrew North and Allen Weston. She was the first woman to be Gandalf Grand Master of Fantasy, first to be SFWA Grand Master, and first inducted by the Science Fiction and Fantasy Hall of Fame.

Published books starting with every letter of the alphabet. In fact, has at least two books starting with every letter of the alphabet except 'U' and 'X'.

In 1977 became the first woman to receive the Grand Master of Fantasy Award from the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America (SFWA). Awarded that group's Nebula Grand Master Award in 1984.

Changed her legal name to Andre Norton in 1934.

Wrote more than 130 books in many genres during her 70-year career. She used a pen name (which she legally changed in 1934) because she expected her audience to be mostly young boys.

In February 2005, the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America created a new literary award, the Andre Norton Award, to recognize outstanding science fiction and fantasy novels written for the young adult market. It was named in her honor to recognize the great many YA novels that she wrote.

In February 2005, she caught flu; she was soon hospitalized with pneumonia. Her doctors found a build-up of fluid around her heart leading to congestive heart failure, but shortly thereafter they released her to return home.
