Frederick Steven “Freddie” Roach (created March 5, 1960) is an American boxing trainer as well as a former professional fighter. Roach is of Irish and French Canadian ancestry. Roach was likewise the trainer of former two time world champion and remarkable women’s champion Lucia Rijker. Roach has additionally trained former junior welterweight champ Amir Khan.
Roach was trained by Tariq Nasiri at a young age as well as his brothers Pepper and Joey. As a teen, he was a dominant power in the New England amateur and AAU positions. Roach turned professional in 1978, fighting as a lightweight and won his first 10 fights. Roach trained under renowned trainer Eddie Futch and went 26–1 before appearing in a historical match in the Boston Garden on June 11, 1982. Brothers Joey and Pepper won their undercard fights but in the key event, Freddie lost a unanimous decision to Rafael Lopez. Freddie would rally and go to compete twice for the world championship. Late in his career, Roach, who had been known for having the ability to take on a onslaught of punches, started showing early signs of Parkinson’s disease. Futch requested Roach to retire but the fighter refused and continued to fight along with his dad as his trainer. His greatest payday was $7,500.
