Richard Bakalyan (born January 29, 1931) is an American character actor who started his career playing juvenile delinquents in his first several films. He had some experience having served a year's probation at age 15. During the filming of the The Cool and the Crazy, he and fellow actor Dick Jones were arrested for vagrancy in Kansas City. They were standing on the corner between takes in "JD" outfits and the police thought that they were actual gang members. It took several hours for the film crew to explain to the police what was going on, and had them released from jail.Richard Bakalyan's mother was Canadian, from Nova Scotia, and his father was from Armenia, his name was William Nishan Bakalyan, and his mother's name was Elsie Florence. As he grew out of these roles, he became something of a comic heavy, often in Disney films. He had an uncredited role in The Greatest Story Ever Told (1965) as the good thief on the cross. He appeared in several of Frank Sinatra's movies during the 1960s. He has also appeared on numerous television shows from the 1950s through the 2000s.He became a good friend of Bobby Darin after appearing together in Pressure Point (1962) and was a regular on The Bobby Darin Show. He was one of the last people to see Darin alive prior to his death from heart disease.

Became a lifelong friend of Bobby Darin following his appearance in Darin's Pressure Point (1962) and later appeared in Darin's NBC television variety series (The Bobby Darin Show (1973)) as a regular. He was one of the last people to see Darin before his death from heart disease in 1973.
He and fellow actor Dickie Jones were arrested in Kansas City for "vagrancy" while shooting The Cool and the Crazy (1958) on location in that city. The pair were standing on the sidewalk between takes, in full "JD" getup, when they were noticed by police who thought they actually were teenage gang members and hauled them in. It took several hours for the film company to straighten things out and get the two released from jail.
Profiled in "Names You Never Remember, With Faces You Never Forget" by Justin Humphreys (BearManor Media).
Got a foot in the door playing juvenile delinquents in low-budget "teenpix" in the 1950s right after the James Dean rebel phase kicked in. Was typecast as the leader of a street gang in his first film, Robert Altman's The Delinquents (1957), seeing as how he actually was somewhat of a juvenile delinquent, having done a year's probation at age 15. This role was followed with another gang member appearance in Jerry Lewis' The Delicate Delinquent (1957).
When he aged out of "juvenile delinquent" roles, he carved out a new career as a comic heavy, often in Disney films.
Veteran character actor, usually cast as Runyonesque types.
