Gretl Basch was born on July 3, 1885 in Vienna, Austria-Hungary, now Austria as Gabriele Freund. She was an actress, known for Hannerl und ihre Liebhaber (1921), Fair People (1930) and Menschen von heute (1920). She was married to Felix Basch. She died on May 28, 1982 in Vienna, Austria.
When the married couple had to emigrate to the USA at the beginning of the 30's she wasn't able to go on from her earlier successes.

The actress Grete Freund attended the conservatory of Vienna before she went to Mannheim together with the family Victor Leon in order to present the play "Der fidele Bauer". When the major of Mannheim refused to accept the actress Mitzi Günther for the role of "Heinerle" because she was a illegitimate child, Grete Freund got the role and made her stage debut thanks to this strange circumstance.

The composer Franz Lehar met Grete Freund and supported her young career. He gave her letter for Berlin in which he recommended her for all his operettas.

In 1945 she founded the public welfare "Help Viennese Children" in Hollywood together with Maria Jeritza and others in order to support needy children in Vienna with care packets.
