1Lost his left eye as one of three wounds he received at the Battle of Belleau Wood during World War I. He was a journalist but was attempting to save a wounded U.S. Marine.
2In 1941 he posthumously awarded a Gold Medal by the Marine Corps League State Commandant. This made him an honorary member of the Marine Corp. This had never been done before.
