Grew up in Sydney, Australia, from the age of 2 months until he was 16 years old.

Was good friends with John Belushi, who mentored him during their Second City days. When Tim was working on Saturday Night Live, he almost quit, due to the show's notoriously high pressure atmosphere, even with Belushi's full encouragement to stay on the series. At one point, Tim intended on going back home to Chicago with Belushi driving him to the airport. However Belushi in the car at the airport, told Tim firmly that he had access to national television airwaves and it would've been a bad career move for him to quit. Tim agreed and said that Belushi took him to a therapist to work through his issues while on the series.
